A jury has retired to consider its verdict on a former bank worker accused of murdering his wife by steering their pick-up truck off a motorway.

Ian Walters is alleged to have deliberately veered off the M1 in Leicestershire while driving home from a "make-or-break" week away with his wife, Tracy.

Mrs Walters, from Swindon in Wiltshire, died in hospital two days after her husband's Mitsubishi L200 crashed into a line of trees.

Prosecutors allege that Walters, who denies a single count of murder, intended to seriously injure or kill his wife.

He told a six-week trial at Leicester Crown Court that he had no memory of the two hours and 40 minutes leading up to the crash.

The 51-year-old driving test examiner, of Tregantle Walk, Swindon, told jurors he could not think of any "reasonable reason" why his vehicle had left the M1 at up to 84mph.

The Crown alleges that Walters, who was seriously injured in the crash, acted out of anger after his wife demanded a divorce following a string of arguments.

Jurors have been told that the couple were returning from a week at a cottage in North Yorkshire when the pick-up crashed at about 12.40pm on March 21 last year.
