TWO Wroughton children took to the streets of Bath to raise funds for their elderly neighbour who suffers from motor neurone disease.

Nine-year-old Lewis Sandwith and sister Hope, seven, took on the Run or Dye 5k challenge in an effort to raise money for 74-year-old Angela Archer.

The pair have grown fond of their neighbour after mum, Jolene, started as a cleaner for her a year and a half ago, and thought up the fundraising themselves.

Angela’s husband, Robert, 77, suffers from peripheral sensoral neuropathy, so Jolene and the children help them out with everyday tasks.

After completing their colourful campaign, the children have now raised more than £800 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Angela said: “Jolene started coming to me about 18 months ago to do some housework around the place and we have just become good friends since then.

“She solves problems or talks to me about everything, and she does bring the children quite often.

“It was their idea that they would like to do this for me and for motor neurone disease.

“The fact that they have raised all this money is just amazing, and it has got up to around £850 already.

“They are such good friends to me, and obviously while my family are great, she is here all day and does so much for me, she is wonderful.

“I was absolutely amazed when I heard what they were doing “But they do love coming here and they do little things for me when they come.

“They are mischief like most children, but in a good way. Lewis is a quiet little boy, but always makes sure I’m all right.

“My husband is disabled as well, so we are so lucky to have them.”

Jolene said: “I started as a once a week cleaner for her, and as the motor neurone has progressed I just go in and look after her, and we just do the household duties she struggles to do.

“In the holidays the kids come round and have grown extremely fond of her.

“We were doing the run, and they asked if they could do it too to raise some money for Angela.

“We got down there really early in the morning, and Lewis ran on with his dad at a good pace while me and Hope followed on behind.

“We all ran at the same time and got totally covered in paint.

“It’s a bit of a crazy atmosphere, and it’s such good fun.

“Every section you get a different colour thrown at you, and right at the end they set off cannons and cover you in all sorts of paints.”
