ONE Swindon songbird will be among the sequins, skirt-ripping, Euro-pop and nul pointers at Saturday evening’s Eurovision Song Contest.

Sarah Covey, 28, of Liden, will step onto the Vienna stage tomorrow to provide vocals for Belgium’s Eurovision entry Rhythm Inside, performed by Loïc Nottet.

She will take her place alongside four backing vocalists and dancers singing to secure votes from the European public.

“I’m really excited and looking forward to the experience. I’ll be very nervous tomorrow. We are 13th, so I think that’s a pretty good place to be, in the middle,” she said.

And the performers will be looking to secure Congratulations from the public after they perform the catchy song, whose message is about not feeling the need to conform.

Hot on the glitter heels of their success in Tuesday’s semi-final, the group are now hoping for a Fairytale night full of douze points.

Rhythm Inside has already gained significant popularity on iTunes thanks to quirky front-man Loïc, with many tipping Belgium for the trophy this year.

But the group are still making their minds up about as to whether they will follow in the footsteps of past Eurovision champions Katrina and the Waves, Abba and Buck’s Fizz.

Sarah said: “I really don’t know. We’ve all chatted about it as it could be possible. There’s quite a hype about Loïc and his song. But the main thing we wanted was to get through to the grand final.

“I’m most looking forward to performing the song again in the final. It’s amazing to think that we are. Loïc Nottet is brilliant.

“Performing his song with him is quite an honour and we’re very lucky to be featured backing singers and dancers. The experience so far has been crazy but amazing.”

Sarah was selected to take part after meeting musical director and backing vocalist Nicolas Dorian while studying at the Royal Academy of Music.

She said: “Nicolas now works for The Voice in Belgium and was asked to get to get together the backing team for Eurovision, so he asked his friends from the UK.

“We all also performed the song on The Voice final Belgique, which was incredible.”

Sarah's career has risen like a phoenix since she started performing at the age of 12 and began singing lessons with Swindon singing charity Janice Thompson Performance Trust in 2001.

She was crowned vocal and supreme champion in the Swindon Music Festival in both 2006 and 2008 as well as best female runner-up in the national talent show Live and Unsigned – South Coast Idol in 2007. She is also a graduate of the prestigious Royal Academy of Music and was an understudy for West End show Killer Queen.

Now on the road to superstardom SarahMs Tovey paid tribute to teacher Janice for making her dreams of performing come true.

“I owe so much to Janice. I really believe I wouldn’t have done all I have without her help, support and training. She’s brilliant.”

The Eurovision grand final will be broadcast live on Saturday, May 23, at 8pm on BBC1. Representing the UK will be pop duo Electro Velvet with I’m Still in Love With You.
