The Bistro at Vaughans Kitchen

After an amazing day out Danny booked us a table at The Bistro in Devizes for my birthday. We have been tempted by the street style food cooked outside before but never eaten in so we were looking forward to a local tasty treat.

We were seated on ground level rather than down in the restaurant, this suited me I prefer a window seat. Being midweek there were only two other tables with diners, it made for an intimate yet casual atmosphere.

The chef brought us a carafe of water and warm garlic and rosemary bread. He was attentive and offered to make a selection of all the starters for us to try after seeing us struggle to choose.

We ordered a bottle of crisp Pinot Grigio to accompany our starter. It looked great, a burst of colour and textures piled onto a sharing board. It included a trio of salmon, the rillette was light as air, the sliced Scottish salmon was rich in flavour and the beetroot cured fish had a delicate essence with earthy beetroot tones. The chorizo and sliced prosciutto were big bold flavours that worked great with the pickled ginger which was sweet and zingy. Houmous and sundried tomato and artichoke tapenade livened up the crispy flat breads, tender olives and dressed slaw balanced out the richer elements.

Danny chose rib eye steak with sauté mushrooms. It had an amazing char, meltingly tender and cooked to perfection. I am not a steak fan but Danny insist I tried a mouthful. I had never tasted a steak so good. It was served with rocket, fresh wedges and herb roasted butternut squash and peppers.

I also opted from the a la carte menu, the porcini mushroom croquettes . The plate was prettily decorated with crispy bread-crumbed balls, once bitten they oozed a porcini infused creamy potato centre which was heavenly. The sauté mushrooms, elegant salad and splashes of salsa verde was a delight.

The meal totalled around £65. It was great to have such a beautiful meal after such a lovely day with my fiancé. I felt it was the icing on the cake.
