MARION SAUVEBOIS profiles an art group where the companionship is as important as the painting

THE PURSUIT of art, in all its complexity and beauty, drives members of Haydon Artists Society.

The group was formed more than a decade ago with just five like-minded artists keen to capture the world, a moment or fleeting emotion and hone their skills.

It now counts 60 draughtsmen, painters and craftsmen with a range of experience, aged between 15 and 86.

“We take anybody and everybody – all they need is an interest in art,” said Barbara Moody, one of group’s founders.

“It doesn’t have to be painting, we have people who come in and do craft work too.

“It’s a very happy place to be. During the meetings we just sit and paint or do whatever artwork we want. There is no tutor and you don’t have to produce anything to be allowed to join. If you come, you’re good enough.”

The society meets in North Swindon Library every Thursday from 7pm to 9pm. There is also a weekly gathering at Haydon Wick Parish Council offices on Tuesdays from 10am to noon.

For many the group has been a means to rediscover their passion or simply try their hand at a new hobby. Others see the weekly meetings as an opportunity to turn often solitary pursuits into a more sociable experience.

Members are free to work on their own individual projects.

“Lots of people have said they used to enjoy doing art and painting at school but then when they left school they didn’t and they want to get back into it,” she said.

“Quite experienced artists say painting is a very lonely thing to do. You sit there and there is nobody else, which can make you feel like giving up.

“Being in a group like Haydon Artists Society gives you that push to get on and do things. You can talk to people who enjoy the same kind of thing you do.

“Lots of talking goes on, particularly at the Thursday group.”

The society holds an exhibition once a year.

Membership is £6 a month. To join, just pop down to North Swindon Library on Thursday evening. For more details go to www.haydonartists.co.uk.
