Eating Out

The White Hart , Atworth

Don’t judge a book by its cover is the old saying, and don’t judge a pub by its carpet might apply here. Pub carpets are a bit of a pet hate of mine I’m afraid and the one at the White Hart is a classic specimen, well past its life and unfortunately distracting from what could be a nice pub interior. However, food and drink and friendly service are the main priorities and I’m pleased to say this pub scores well on all three. The printed menu whilst not extensive and full of old pub grub favourites does feature a few twists on the traditional. There is also a good variety of specials on offer.

I opted to start with breaded mushrooms and my hungry son David went for whitebait. Both dishes were generous in portion and very well presented, David’s crisp and crunchy whitebait was accompanied by dressed salad, rustic bread and paprika mayonnaise and served on a wooden ‘trencher’ board. My breaded mushrooms were nicely crisp on the outside and succulent in the middle, served with dressed salad and mayonnaise.

After polishing off the starters and feeling slightly full ,we had main courses of a ‘Classic Burger’ with bacon and blue cheese dressing with David going for the Thai Green Chicken curry. The Classic Burger meal was a spectacular work of art, fries served in a mini frying basket and a juicy burger sandwiched in a glazed bun with layers of bacon, salad and dressing.and topped with a large gherkin. It was a lot taller than it was wide. The Thai Green Chicken curry was creamy and chock-full of chicken, a portion of rice on the side and two giant poppadums on top.David’s only gripe was that the curry could have been a bit spicier and more colourful in appearance.

We washed our meals down with a half pint of Bath Gem for me and pint of coke for David. The bill for drinks and food was just shy of £38, not unreasonable for such a good blow-out.
