Paolo was not drunk says his record company

PAOLO Nutini's record company has strongly denied he was drunk at his Oasis gig in spite of complaints from fans.

Some audience members felt that the Scottish musician's performance was awful and walked out after only a few songs, saying the star appeared over the limit.

But his record company insists Paolo was completely sober, and the star's individual style on stage and Scottish accent may have been misinterpreted.

A spokeswoman for Atlantic Records said: "He certainly wasn't drunk. He is from Scotland and has a strong dialect."

Tour manager Karon Malcolm said: "If people aren't familiar with him on stage, it may seem a little strange.

"The second Paolo starts performing, he bends over double - that is how he is."

The 19-year-old singer also had technical problems with his sound equipment, which proved a distraction.

He uses in-ear monitors, which allow him to hear his singing but one side wasn't working. "There were a couple of technical faults with his sound.

"For the first couple of numbers he was struggling. It was putting him off. Eventually he had to pull them out," said Ms Malcolm.

The Oasis concert venue had several complaints, which it passed to the star's management.

But Oasis manager Owen Williams said many devotees stayed until the end and had a good night.

He said: "There was a group of people who were disappointed and left early, but there was also a larger group who seemed happy and stayed until the end.

"We fielded complaints from some people who left early and said he looked the worse for wear.

"Those who stayed until the end seemed to have a good evening.

"When he was doing autographs Paolo seemed fine. I think the youngsters enjoyed it."

Readers who attended the gig have expressed their disappointment on the Swindon Advertiser website.

Sarah from Swindon said: "I am so glad I only live in Swindon.

If I would have had to travel to see a man who acted more like Rab C Nesbitt than a musical performer I would have been very cross!"

Michelle Toms, also of Swindon said: "I was near the front. I couldn't understand him. He did look tipsy and sounded like an old man."

Others felt the young singer did not deserve such harsh criticism.

Tanya of Swindon said: "I am horrified at some of these comments. Paolo was wonderful.

"Any true fan who has seen him more than once would know he performs like this. He has an extremely strong Scottish accent - not something we should slate for not understanding, don't be so closed-minded Swindon."

Paolo did appear worse for wear but still entertained well in a bad environment, can anyone tell me the name of the opening act as he was considerably better than the main show?

i just want to say how disgusted i am at the so say fans of paolo nutini that have slated him, he was fantastic at the oasis. Any one who really enjoys paolos music will know the way he performs its what makes him so unique. I am also sorely disapointed in the advertiser for giving him such bad press they made it sound as if everyone that went was disapointed, there was no mention of the fact that is was boiling in the hall and the oasis shut everyone in, swindon has no hope of becoming a place musicians want to come to if this is how the local press are going to treat them on the say so of a few people, i just hope that paolo doesnt take offence by the minority and comes to play in swindon again.

I thought he was fantastic and so did my 9 and 16 yr old daughters. Ok so he didn't sound like he does on his records but that made it even better, to get a different perspective. I would love to have a recording of the gig. As a friend described it, his music was raw. I certainly didn't think he was drunk - and so what if he was. he still conducted himself well

Was it that the microphones were switched on?

He uses in-ear monitors, which allow him to hear his singing but one side wasn't working. "There were a couple of technical faults with his sound.

This is a fairly common problem. Monitors conflict with each other, especially with larger bands, or when musicians from different bands team up. I've seen many bass players unplug, and play without their monitor to help the band.

The Oasis concert venue had several complaints, which it passed to the star's management.

A bad workman blames his tools.
How come most people seemed to think the support act was great?

Unfortunately it seems to be the way music is marketed these days.

Hi Colin - Newton Faulkner was the opening act! Wasn't he great!? (In my opinion better than Paolo too!) He's performing at the 12 Bar in Swindon on 16th May - should be a good, intimate gig! Windy x

No one has actually said that he was drinking all through the gig so clearly people have good reason to think what they think. After having read a few things about him though apparently he doesn't sound the same at a gig as he does on his album. Surely this isn't a good thing though if people miss interpret it as being drunk. He did have a great support act who really grabbed the audiance so it really showed that he didn't have the same effect on us. You can't just get by, by being a name. You have to work at connecting with your audiance. I will still listen to his album but I doubt I will go and see him live again.

if he wasn't drunk then his performance was worse than before.
it was terrible, and i expect to at least recognise the songs he mumbled his way through.
an awful live act!
shame as other recently have been great.
dont blame the venue!
and those that defend the talentless baffoon would say he's great because they want him in their knickers.i suggest they went to look and drool over him, not listen to a musical artist, cause that he aint.

i went to the gig on sunday and there is only one word to describe it...AMAZING!!!! it was such a good night. I would def. pay to see him again! so what if he had a couple of drinks? he sang every song perfectly (with the tiny exception of alloway grove at the start cus of technical difficulties). if he sang the wrong words, sang no words, didnt know what was happening next etc then people would have reason to complain but he didnt so i dont see how they can complain!!! so what if he was drinking on stage-it made no difference.and how can the adver say people lost enthusiasm as it went on - from where i was (v.close to the front!)the cheering only got louder especially for king of the swingers and funky cigarette! leave Paolo alone the concert was amazing !!!!!!!

He was drinking, but if you actually took note, he took maybe 3/4 swigs throughout the whole gig!

i think the review in the adver was absolutly awfull.. you have no right to slate him like you did .. he was not drunk!
myslef and many others my age happened to think he was amazing he gave a brilliant show. He may not have sounded exactly like the album but thats the point of a gig .. LIVE music its ment to be different to the cd ..to be honest i think you need to get a new gig reviwer, as they are obviously deff and blind or simply have no sense for brilliant music.
i think he deservs an apology.

I went to see him in Brixton last night and left after half an hour. It was terrible. I first saw him perform over two years ago in a pub in balham - where he walked onto the stage looking terrified and blew me away. I have since seen him at Jongleurs and The Mean Fiddler in London and at V last year. All of which were fantastic. I dont know whats happened there, and I certainly wont say he was drunk or stoned, as I have no idea. But - you couldnt even here the words of the songs. I never expect to understand him when he starts talking with his strong accent but you cant blame him for that. But there was some definite mumbling going on. Was a shame

Were we at different concerts? Paolo was truly amazing and whether he was drunk or not gave a fantastic performance. We were standing near to the exit and certainly didn't observe people 'pouring' or 'streaming' out as some reports have said. Paolo has an unusual style, but it works very well. He also has a very strong scottish accent which can be difficult for others to understand, but it is unfair to accuse him of being drunk or sounding like an old man. We've been to loads of gigs and Paolo's performnace was on a par with the best in the business. It troubles me that there is such a lack of sophistication among those who were there - come on guys, appreciate a unique style when you see one as it doesn't come along very often.

I was disappointed by Paolo. He stumbled on stage late, giggling about Celtic winning the league and drank from a bottle and a can of beer throughout the set, ending the show with a song on how great weed is. I'm surprised he didn't have a joint in his hand! His voice was great, granted, but at the age of 19 you need a certain arrogance to perform drunk to hundreds of fans who have paid a lot of money, I think he'll burn out quickly if he keeps up that attitude.

This is all stupid! This gig was the second time I've seen Paolo, and he was just as amazing as the first time! He may have had a drink, but he did that at the last one too. He was absolutely fine... His accent is very strong! He really wasn't drunk! We met him after the gig and it was amazing! I love him! He doesnt deserve any criticism!

"The second Paolo starts performing, he bends over double - that is how he is."

He did that at the last gig I went to, HE WAS NOT DRUNK! AND HE WAS AMAZING!
