BARBURY is globally famous for its annual horse trials event but on Sunday racegoers will have to contend without the faithful steeds in this year's Horseless Steeplechase.

Last year the fundraising event organised by the Rotary clubs of Swindon Phoenix and Marlborough welcomed around 100 runners who helped to raise more than £2,000 for Rotary charities with racers tackling the Barbury International Horse Trials Course, with its array of obstacles, on foot.

This year will see the fourth instalment of the unusual day in aid of Wiltshire Air Ambulance and other charities.

Swindon Phoenix Rotary President Geoff Beale said: "Are you a runner? How would you like the challenge of running the world famous Barbury International Horse Trials Course –going over the jumps and through several of the water features?

"If so, join us again for our fourth annual Horseless Steeplechase & Cross-Country Challenge at The Fabulous Barbury Castle Estate on Sunday, August 2. The event is held just outside of Swindon and is organised by the Rotary Clubs of Marlborough & District and Swindon Phoenix.

"This is unique event as it is pits stamina against an international trials course at Barbury.

"There are three races on the day, for all fitness abilities, ranging from a 2.5-mile course for novices, to a five-mile course for the chasers and the ultimate 10-mile Cross Country Challenge for thoroughbreds.

"All proceeds from the day will go to the Wiltshire Air Ambulance and charities supported by Rotary. Last year we raised £2,817, and we want to beat this figure this year.

"Come along and have a great run, whilst supporting local charities."
