JUST days after bringing home his new European title, Swindon boxer Jamie Cox was called into action again, but with a different kind of opponent this time around.

The 28-year-old was boxing clever when he visited Draycott Sports Camp at Oakhurst Community Primary School and was led out to a slightly smaller arena than that at Wembley on Friday night.

He was surrounded by 140 excited schoolchildren yesterday, who were poised with their questions and expecting hard-hitting answers from the champ.

Once the event settled down and Jamie became more at ease with his questioners, he even lent his help to a boxing session with some of the older children, guiding some 10 and 11-year-olds through a few drills and giving advice.

Mark Draycott, owner of the sports camp, said: “We put on a nice presentation for the children and I think Jamie was a little taken aback at first by how many children there were actually facing him.

“They got to see the belt, ask him some questions and do some coaching. It will be something they remember for a long time hopefully.

“Once he got to grips with it he was only happy to answer their questions about his daily life and the preparations that come with being a professional boxer.”

The super-middleweight is sponsored by Ricky Mazzotta, whose daughter attends the sports camp. It was that link which set up yesterday’s event.

The camp itself has been running for just over a year after Mark, a PE teacher at Oakhurst, set the business up.

He and his team cater for children from nursery up to year six through the school holidays and aims to bring the lesser-known sports to the kids’ doorsteps.

“We have been going for over a year and it’s really taken off up here,” he said. “Participation is up and we seem to be pretty much on a 50-50 split between girls and boys now.

“We are all about encouraging girls into sport and exposing all of the children to sports they might never have seen or heard of before.

“For me, when I was growing up it was all about football, football, football. That’s my background, but my plan is to show these children different sports.”
