BOXING champion Jamie Cox - a Commonwealth Games gold medalist - is to appear in court charged with domestic abuse.

The boxer, whose real name is James Simon Russan, is due to appear at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court, in D’Eynsford Road, London, on Friday, August 14 on four charges relating to domestic violence following an incident in the capital last month.

The 28-year-old, of Woodhall Park, who snatched the WBO European super-middleweight crown earlier this month, is due to appear at the court in London at 10am.

He stands accused of four offences relating to domestic abuse including harassment, using violence to enter a property, assault, and criminal damage.

Commonwealth Games gold medalist Cox was arrested by Metropolitan Police officers following an incident at a property in Lambeth Road, London, on July 16.

He is charged with harassment between July 9 and July 16, the use of violence for the purposes of securing entry to premises on July 16, assault by beating on Thursday, July 16, and criminal damage on July 16.

It will be his first appearance at court relating to the offences.

Cox did not respond to calls from the Adver.

It comes weeks after the Swindon southpaw collected his European title after making light work of Swiss-born Spaniard Blas Miguel Martinez on July 24 at Wembley Arena.

Cox first came to fame as an outstanding amateur, boxing for the Walcot ABA Cub before winning the ABA championships in 2005 as a lightwelterweight.

The following year, at the age of just 19, he won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne after opponent Moses Kopo of Lesotho pulled out of the final.

“It was a wicked reception,” he said earlier this year, recalling his victory homecoming.

“My street was full of banners, all my family, friends, everyone I knew were there.

“I had such great support when I was over in Australia.

“People were waking up at silly hours to watch my fights.”

Cox turned professional in February 2007 and signed with promoter Frank Warren, at the same time announcing Richie Woodhall as his trainer.

His debut at the O2 Arena saw a unanimous four-round points victory over journeyman Johnny Greaves, and by October he had stretched his record to 8-0.

His professional career has also seen Cox team up with Ferndale Road trainer Paddy Fitzpatrick and Newport’s Tony Borg before settling with his current trainer John Costello.

He also holds personal trainer qualifications.

Just a few months ago, along with Steve Murtagh and John McDonagh, he set up the Arena Health and Fitness gym at Crowood House in Gipsy Lane.
