DAILY experiences inspires painter David Robinson's work on local landscapes and rail commuters which will be showcased at Swindon Open Studios this September.

Now in its eight year, the annual festival will once more open its doors in the first two weekends of September to showcase more than 50 artists' paintings, sculptures, photographs and mixed media artworks to the general public.

Visitors to 39 locations around the town - including David's own studio in 19 Wells Street - will be able to take a dip into the creative scene of Swindon and watch them at work.

For David, being part of that scene is particularly important, and reinforces his vision of re-telling everyday life and personal experience.

"It’s a way of communicating my personal experiences – just like musicians do when they write a song, but in a visual way.

"I can’t tell you what a privilege it is to see works by top-notch British artists right here on my doorstep, without having to travel, queue, or pay an extortionate entry fee," he said.

"Where else can you examine Henry Moore’s and Lucian Freud’s drawing technique up close, in the flesh? The new Museum & Art Gallery will be such a catalyst for the creative economy – I can’t wait.

"I really admire Juliet Wood’s paintings of people in Swindon MacDonald’s that were displayed at various venues here two years ago. Nothing beats seeing high quality work being produced and displayed locally. I am also very inspired by Andrew Gifford’s landscape paintings, particularly those he did of his home town of Middlesbrough."

David privileges 4B pencil and an A5 book for his sketches, while most of his painted work features oil paints and sometimes acrylic.

"The work I produce is all about my daily experiences," he said.

"I paint landscapes of Swindon, and paintings of people I see on the train each day. I work in a fairly realistic way, developing my compositions from sketchbook drawings and quick painting studies done outside.

"My studio is a spare room upstairs in our house. It’s the place where I read, prepare and prime boards, paint, and carry out all the administration that is part of being an artist. The room faces west - unfortunately there are no north-facing windows mid-terrace - so it is good to start work early when the morning light is consistent.

Swindon Open Studios will take place on September 5 and 6 and September 12 and 13.
