THEY were at the forefront of the UK beat-group boom and the first backing band to emerge as stars.

And The Shadows' music lives on at the heart of Wiltshire thanks to a gang of lifelong fans.

The North Wilts Shadows Club was launched in Hook in October 2013 by Peter Gillies and a fellow Shadows connoisseur to "emulate" the sound of Cliff Richard’s backing group.

"Cliff Richard and The Drifters started in 1958 with the release of Move It but, because of the American Drifters having had several hits, the name was changed to The Shadows," said Peter. "Over the years, The Shadows had many instrumental and vocal hits. Many of us, who were playing guitar during that time, have tried to emulate that sound and to try and achieve it. There are many Shadows Guitar Clubs throughout the world, even in America. There are about twenty clubs in the UK.

"We have the same set-up as all the clubs in that we provide a venue with the mandatory Vox AC30 amplifier, an echo unit with a choice of either playing to a backing track or with a line-up of rhythm guitar, bass and drums."

NWSC counts a devoted number of members who travel from Swindon and as far as the Forest of Dean to Hook Village Hall each month.

For many it is an opportunity to jam with like-minded musicians.

"We started the club because most of the other clubs are about 30 miles away," added Peter. "Players who had only been able to play at home, come to the club to play with friends who have the same interest. We have a very small group of players who live in or around the Swindon area or who come from as far away as Bristol, Chepstow, Moreton-In-Marsh and the Forest Of Dean. We welcome anyone who wants to just turn up with their guitar and join us."

There is no membership fee although musicians are charged £5 each month to play. This covers the cost of hiring the hall and refreshments.
