AFTER nearly 60 years, a dream finally came true on Saturday as two lovebirds finally got their perfect white wedding.

Harry and Rose Brookman first said their nuptials at a Moredon register office in 1956 but it was not close to the ceremony they both wished for.

However, thanks to the efforts of local people, family and friends, the couple tied the knot once again – but this time exactly how they imagined it.

They renewed their vows at the historic St Mary’s Church, near Lydiard House, on Saturday.

Dressed in a beautiful white dress, Rose was escorted down the aisle by her son Ian.

“This has been a dream come true,” said Rose, 79. “Everything was perfect and even the weather was good. It was exactly what I wanted.”

The couple first met on a trip to the cinema when they were both teenagers. They got married several years later but because of their finances they were unable to afford a church wedding.

Rose said: “Getting married now means we were able to do it surrounded by all our family.

“And I put photos of my parents in my bouquet so they could be there as well.”

The ceremony came about after granddaughters Victoria, Ellen and Catherine together with the couple’s daughter Beverley realised how much a proper wedding would mean.

Victoria put an appeal on Facebook and were swamped with generous offers of help, ranging from ring cushions and hand-made invitations to bridesmaids dresses and flowers.

Harry, 81, said: “We are so grateful for what everyone has done. This is what we wanted. Rose looked beautiful in the dress.

“This is exactly the wedding we wanted all those years ago.”

After the ceremony, the wedding party went to the couple’s Park North bungalow for a ‘cockney-style knees-up’.

There was plenty of home-made beer and the couple had their first dance to Love Me Tender by Elvis Presley.

Beverley said planning the day had been a full-time job but everyone was overwhelmed by how generous everyone had been.

“It’s something that has taken over our entire lives. We’ve been staying up until three in the morning but it’s been worth every minute,” she said.

“I think I’ve been Bridezilla in all of this, but the response has been more than we could have wished for. It's been fantastic.

“We’re so grateful to people in the community who have helped make my mum and dad so happy.”
