SUPERMARKET staff will be trading aisles for miles for a good cause this weekend.

The chosen charity of workers at Sainsbury’s, in Stratton, is the Brighter Futures appeal for a new radiotherapy department at the Great Western Hospital.

And on Saturday (SEPT 5), staff will be donning their walking boots to raise money to help equip the new department.

The intrepid walkers have been garnering sponsorship from customers, friends and family, before they set out from the hospital at 11am and take a route measuring approximately five miles back to the store.

Along the way, they will be visiting the Sun Inn at Coate, as well as the White Hart in Stratton to pass the bucket around and enjoy some well-earned refreshments, with the kind permission of the respective pub managers, said a spokesman for the store.

And the group is set to return to the supermarket, in Oxford Road, Stratton, at around 2pm.

Jennifer Green, of Brighter Futures, said she was delighted with the way staff at the store have embraced their new charity of the year and taken on the fundraising challenge.

"It shows just how much the people of Swindon are behind us in our quest to equip the radiotherapy unit," she said.

"Good luck and God bless to everyone taking part."

The radiotherapy appeal is raising £2.9 million in order to bring cancer care closer to those living in Swindon and across Wiltshire.

The money raised will equip a new Radiotherapy Centre, to be built at the Great Western Hospital, and will provide a service to a catchment population of around 340,000 people who live within half an hour's drive of the facility.

Sponsorship is still being sought for participants and anyone wishing to help can do so by visiting the store’s Customer Services desk, or by contacting either Trish Carter or Barrie Matthews, on 01793 828255.
