A BATTLE of Britain-themed coffee morning will be held by the Royal British Legion this week to honour the 75th anniversary of the events.

On September 11 from 10am, the Royal British Legion’s Pop-In Information and Advice Centre, in Regent Street, will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the first major historical battle to be fought entirely in the air.

Members of the public, veterans and serving armed forces members are invited to call in and reflect on the sacrifices made by the Battle of Britain pilots.

The Battle of Britain raged from May to September 1940. German Luftwaffe planes attacked RAF airfields and their buildings in an attempt to bring down the formidable force of the RAF. This was ahead of a planned land invasion by German soldiers.

The RAF were able to use skill and bravery to defeat the German attack and save Britain from invasion during the Second World War.

Prime Minister Winston Churchill famously said of the conflict: “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”

Isobel Thompson, from the centre, said those who served in the battle changed the course of history.

“We are honoured to remember the bravery of, and the sacrifices made by all air crews involved in the Battle of Britain, which by their actions became such a pivotal moment in the history of the Second World War,” she said.

The coffee morning is the first in a series of Battle of Britain events set to take place in the town this month.

Legion staff in partnership with Swindon Heritage will hold a Battle of Britain Vintage Day in the town centre on September 12 from 10am to 5pm.

It will include full size replica Hurricane and Spitfire models, 40s music and dancing and vintage vehicles.

The Pop-In Information and Advice centre of the Royal British Legion provides services to service personnel and veterans and provide a forum for the public to learn more about the charity and the services they provide.
