THE free market has taken on new meaning for traders in Royal Wootton Bassett after the town council waived pitch fees for a whole year.

Councillors decided to introduce free trading at the town’s Wednesday market to support traders and encourage new entrepreneurs.

“If you have ever considered running a market stall now is the time to do it,” said Councillor Mike Leighfield.

"You will receive a whole year of rent free trading in Bassett.”

Shoppers can find regular traders selling fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, plants, pet supplies and more and some traders have been setting up for more than 20 years.

“We have some great regulars and we would like to encourage new traders, too, and you will have a full year rent-free site from your first day’s trading,” said Coun Leighfield.

"It’s important that shoppers have a pleasant experience and a wide variety of goods and produce to browse at the market.

“We would love to see stalls selling bread and bakery items, cosmetics, bed linen, jewellery, footwear and clothing come and join us each week.”

The news has been welcomed by regular traders at the weekly market, such as Claire Tovey, who sells plants and shrubs with the help of the mascot, Ted the Bassett Hound.

She said: "Everything is home grown, which customers seem to appreciate.

"Everyone shares their knowledge and experiences and I am more than happy to offer help.

"New plants are introduced from time to time so it’s always worth coming along for a look. Ted is always happy to see people."

Some of the stallholders have been established in the town for more than 20 years, and as well as plants and shrubs visitors can pick up a selection of goods, including fish, pet food, cards and gift wrap, deli items such as cheese and bacon, crystals and gifts, home-made cakes and pies, jams and chutneys, and fresh fruit and vegetables.

You can also pick up a variety of odds and ends including string, tea towels, dusters and batteries from Mr Cook's All Those Useful Things stall.

He said: "You can’t beat a familiar face on the High Street and it’s easy to come back if you should have any problems - customer service and personal contact are so important."
