TWO worlds collided in the name of love this weekend as Pride And Prejudice met Star Trek at a unique wedding ceremony.

Newlyweds Uan and Rebecca Harrison, 33 and 29 respectively, of Freshbrook, took their vows in a marriage blessing held at the Twigs Community Garden in Cheney Manor, dressed as brooding Mr Darcy and the high-spirited Elizabeth Bennett from the classic 1813 Jane Austen novel.

But their symbolic handfasting ceremony had an interesting twist on the traditional wedding vows, with the couple combining their two passions, Pride And Prejudice and intergalactic space adventure series Star Trek, to make a unique speech.

The ceremony followed their legal marriage at Swindon Register Office and honeymoon in the Forest of Dean last week.

Mr Harrison hoped his unusual choice of vows would help the couple live long and prosper in their marriage, as he alluded to two of his favourite star-crossed lovers in his vows – and beamed his bride up in a spaceship of romance.

“I promise to love you as much as Captain Riker loves Troi,” he said.

As they exchanged rings, the bride responded with vows inspired by her beloved Jane Austen novels Pride And Prejudice and Sense And Sensibility.

“I promise to always be headstrong, obstinate and wilful like Lizzie Bennet. I promise to find romance in all that we do, like Marianne Dashwood,” she said.

Guests arrived accompanied by a soundtrack drawn from the couple’s favourite blockbusters, including music from Lord Of The Rings and the film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

The couple said they were overjoyed to spend the day with family and friends, including the bride’s children Archie and Florence and bridegroom’s daughter Matilda, who acted as best man and bridesmaids on the day.

“We’re so excited to share this day with our family and friends, and we can’t wait to say our vows in front of everyone,” the bride said.

Pride And Prejudice, which is her favourite novel and TV series, inspired real-life Darcy (Mr Harrison) to get down on one knee this February, dressed in breeches, riding boots, waistcoat and dress shirt, to give his fiancée the proposal of her dreams.

Mr Harrison went to painstaking lengths to give his future wife the perfect proposal – even wooing her with the same speech Darcy gives Elizabeth in the book – which he memorised during his lunch breaks, where he works as a teaching assistant at a school for disabled children.

The couple have been together for three years and recently moved into their first home together.
