PUPILS at Ruskin Junior School swapped their usual purple uniforms for 1940s fashion as they were transported back to the Second World War era to mark Battle of Britain Day.

Traditional school lunches were also not on the menu either, as the pupils immersed themselves in 1940s life to learn how basic sandwiches were made during wartime. But they rounded off the day with a school celebration, recreating a street party in the school playground.

Each class also wrote their own song to mark the occasion which they performed at the party.

Head teacher Andrew Beadnell praised the efforts of both staff and students to get into the spirit of things to mark the occasion. He said: “It is great to see the effort the children and their parents have made with their costumes, there are fighter pilots all over the place here!

“We have done quite a lot of work on the Second World War throughout the school, looking at things like The Blitz. Children find it fascinating, it is still very relevant history, and for some families it is still in living memory. I remember when I was a child my grandfather telling me stories, and it is something I have always been passionate about.

“We were very keen to mark Battle of Britain Day as we all felt really inspired by it.”
