A WOMAN in her eighties had to be taken to hospital after a fire broke out in her kitchen.

Firefighters, paramedics and the police attended the scene of the blaze on Calvert Road in Walcot on Monday shortly after 5pm.

A spokeswoman for Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Firefighters were called out to a kitchen fire and a woman in her eighties was rescued from the property at 5pm.

“The house was heavily filled with smoke, so firefighters used two sets of breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire. Ventilation equipment was also used to clear the smoke.

“Three fire engines were in attendance; two from Swindon and one from Stratton. They were clear of the scene by 5.45pm.”

A spokesman for the South Western Ambulance Service said paramedics had taken the woman to the Great Western Hospital with breathing difficulties.

Police also attended the scene of the fire and are investigating the incident.
