GABRIELLE APLIN - LIGHT UP THE DARK

Gabrielle Aplin became a household name during Christmas 2012 when her cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s hit The Power Of Love was used on that now infamous department store advert.

One studio album and a worldwide tour later, the 22-year-old returns to our ears with Light Up The Dark. Fans will be happy to hear tracks such as Shallow Love and Hurt.

However, the singer shows signs of a new sound with tracks such as Slip Away with its almost funk-like guitar riff, and Heavy Heart which is stripped back but steps away from the acoustic guitar Aplin is used to.

Sweet Nothing has a catchy, toe-tapping beat, while the title track packs a punch.

Once again, she has put together an album that is good, both musically and lyrically, but she too shows signs of maturity by daring to take her music in a slightly new direction, whilst staying loyal to what she does best – letting her delicate vocals shine. 9/10 REBECCA FLITTON
