A 17-year-old has today been sentenced to ten years imprisonment for wounding with intent to cause grevious bodily harm.

On February 17 the teenager from London, who cannot be named for legal reasons, stabbed 21-year-old Jahmay Richards in Kingswood Avenue, Park North.

A jury at Bristol Crown Court found the teenager guilty of wounding with intent to cause GBH after a trial which ended last month.

Mr Richards was stabbed repeatedly when he tried to flee two attackers in Kingswood Avenue and he was knifed seven times in the torso, arms and legs.

He sustained a wound to the back of his head, two wounds in his left tricep, one in his right tricep, one in his chest and one in each thigh. He also sustained a collapsed lung and was treated at Southmead Hospital in Bristol.

Detective Constable James Newbery, who led the investigation, said: “Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank those members of the public who provided us with comprehensive witness statements and took time out of their daily lives to give evidence in court.

"Without this, we would not have been able to reach today’s conclusion.

“The injuries sustained in this attack were so severe that paramedics have said the victim was very, very fortunate to survive.

“This was a brutal and vicious attack which took place in a built up, residential area.

"Many of the residents in the neighbourhood have been affected by this frightening incident, and it is not right, nor is it acceptable, that the behaviour of a small number of individuals should instil fear into innocent members of the community – many of which have lived in the Parks area all of their lives.

“I would like to reassure these members of the community that Wiltshire Police continue to work tirelessly to prevent serious crime like this taking place and that all reports we receive are taken extremely seriously.

"Any intelligence we receive will be treated in the strictest of confidence and we will always act upon these reports.

“I hope that today’s result serves as a stark warning to other people that Wiltshire Police will not stop until all avenues of enquiry have been exhausted and justice has been done.”
