CHRIS Gleed did not specify which immigrants would behave in the anti-social ways he predicted.

This country has successfully absorbed many different ethnic groups over the centuries.

These include Celts, Romans, Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Vikings, Normans, Picts, Scots, Irish, Jews, Indians and many more.

England was named after the Angles, who originated in Germany. More recently, the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha family from Bavaria integrated so well that it took possession of the British crown and has hung on to it ever since (although it had the good sense to change the family name to Windsor in 1917).

Even our patron saint was born in Palestine to Greek parents, and, good Europeans that we are, we share him with Romania and Malta.

The present Mayor of London was born abroad, and many of our greatest companies were founded by immigrants or their descendants.

Unquestionably, our language, our culture and our history have been greatly enriched by the diversity of our ancestors.

I would suggest many of the unpleasant behavioural patterns listed by Chris Gleed can legitimately be applied to people whose presence is much more distressing to us ordinary citizens: the over-privileged and the super-rich.

They jump queues, live in their own communities, have their own schools, show contempt for the rules which govern the rest of us, respond aggressively if their status is challenged and take far more from society than they give back.
