A HAYDON after-school club has been awarded top marks by Government inspectors, four years after hitting the same heights, with praise for inspirational leadership.

The Bee Hive Club at Orchid Vale Primary School in Torun Way has been rated as outstanding by Ofsted following an inspection on October 15.

At its last inspection on July 6, 2011, it also impressed visiting professionals.

The club was rated across the effectiveness of its leadership, the quality of teaching and personal development of children – acing them all.

Lynne Lewington, the Ofsted inspector, said: “Children are motivated and enthusiastic to participate in all that is on offer in this vibrant after school club.

“They demonstrate excellent social skills and good manners. Behaviour is excellent.

“The enthusiastic staff ensure the environment is attractive and interesting, providing a variety of activities suitable for the broad range of ages of children that attend.

“The older children enjoy helping the young ones. Children learn many skills from each other.

“Great care is taken to ensure children's dietary needs are met effectively. Children independently follow good hygiene routines.

“They enjoy healthy food and excellent opportunities to engage in physical activities.

“All staff work in close partnership with parents and other professionals to support and promote each child's needs through a shared approach.

“Leadership is inspirational and exceptionally strong.

“The management ensures staff have the skills to undertake their roles and constantly encourages staff to reflect on their practice and plan for improvements.

“The team is highly effective in adapting the provision to meet the changing needs of the children that attend.”

The only point Ms Lewington could make about the club improving was directed at enabling the children to relax and rest quietly if they want to.

During her visit, the inspector toured the premises and viewed resources with the manager, and observed the children and staff at play.

The inspector examined records and documents provided by the manager Tracy Rothery and observed an activity with her.

The club looks after children aged four to eight, and currently has 26 youngsters on its roster.

The Bee Hive Club is one of two run by the Beehive Company and was registered to Orchid Vale in 2006.

The club opens each weekday afternoon from 3pm to 5.45pm during school term times only.

There are six members of staff working with the children, three of whom hold a National Vocational Qualification at level 3. The manager holds an early years degree.
