SWINDON' Toys "R Us® is to hold its second Christmas Browsing event exclusively for families affected by autism and additional needs at the weekend.

The store at Oxford Road has planned a quiet browsing session on Sunday, November, 15 for families allowing them to enjoy a relaxed environment to pick out some ideal Christmas gifts for their children together.

Originally initiated in 2014 by the company's Leeds store in collaboration with Victoria Holdsworth, founder of local autism groups - Autism friendly UK, other branches across the company now offer the same experience each year for families affected by autism and additional needs.

The National Autistic Society has been instrumental in assisting with advice and information to all store managers to help understand the needs of families.

All Toys “R” Us® stores will be inviting families to their local store to experience an environment suited to their children’s needs.

Reduced fluorescent lighting, a lack of loud music or tannoy announcements and autism friendly signage are just some of the initiative’s Toys“R”Us® will be carrying out to ensure a more calming influence in store on the day.

Mike Coogan, Toys“R”Us® Marketing and eCommerce Director said: “Our teams are passionate about toys and we want to offer the opportunity for all children and young adults to experience the fun in a toy shop regardless of their disability.

"We understand toys are more personal to many additional needs of individuals, so being able to relax and pick something special themselves and enjoy the facilities and content of the store, the same as other children can do without concerns will help in making their Christmas truly magical”.

Victoria Holdsworth, Founder of Autism Friendly UK said: “Autism friendly events at Toys 'R' Us have given families of those with additional needs a chance to enjoy toy shopping together without fear of judgement or a busy and difficult environment.

"I'm very proud to have worked with them in starting this event and I hope that it continues to bring joy to families.”

The stores will open one hour prior to the official store opening times but due to Sunday Trading legislation will be unable to perform any sales transactions, process any direct purchases or complete any returns during this period.

These will all be actioned at the official store opening time at 11am.

The store is alerting families that this delay may cause concerns for children who struggle with patience so this should be a consideration before visiting.
