POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a crash at a black spot near Ogbourne St George which left a man from the Swindon area with life-threatening injuries.

At around 11.45pm on Sunday a silver Toyota Corolla was involved in a collision with a blue Audi A4 and a black Vauxhall Astra on the A346 between Marlborough and Swindon, near the Ogbourne Downs Golf Club.

Four people were hurt with the driver of the Corolla, a 20-year-old man from Swindon area, suffering serious internal, head and leg injuries, which are described as life threatening.

He was taken to Southmead Hospital and the 24-year-old driver of the Audi, who suffered serious leg injuries, was also taken to Southmead.

Firefighters from Marlborough and Ramsbury freed four of those involved in the crash and the A346 was completely closed to traffic in both direction for more than four hours to allow collision investigators to examine the scene.

Two people were cut free from one car by 12.55am today and the other two people were cut from the other car by 1.10am.

The 66-year-old passenger and 30-year-old driver of the Astra, who were both women from Bristol, suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon by ambulance.

It is the latest accident on the stretch of road which Ogbourne St George Parish Council is aware is an accident blackspot.

Councillors approached Wiltshire Council last year to see if the speed limit could be reduced from 60mph to 50mph on the stretch of road past the golf club but the suggestion was refused.

Wiltshire Council traffic engineering manager David Thomas said drivers were unlikely to stick to the new speed limit.

Parish council chairman Gordon Mudge said: “Through the years, even before my time on the parish council, there were concerns about that road. There are lots of big dips and you can really get some excessive speeders.

“But in my opinion it is also a problem when people go too slowly, then traffic bunches up behind them and people get impatient and that is when the accidents occur, as they are not keeping up with the speed limit.”

Anyone who witnessed this collision, or has any information, should contact PC Alan King on 101.
