FORMER champion jockey Tony McCoy was lucky to emerge unscathed after the car he was driving was involved the crash on the M4 near Swindon yesterday morning.

The incident involved three vehicles and led to part of the M4 between junctions 15, for Swindon East, and 14 being closed while emergency services attended.

The recently-retired 20-times champion jockey was unhurt and was pleased to report everyone else involved in the crash walked away.

"A van collided with a car in front of me and I had nowhere to go," McCoy, 41, said.

"I'm fine and and everyone else involved is good, which is unbelievable really, as it was a fair old impact," said McCoy who is part-owner of the Outside Chance pub in Manton, near Marlborough.

"The three vehicles are gone (written off), but it's nice to walk away from something like that."

McCoy won his first Champion Jockey title in 1995/96 and took 19 consecutive Champion Jockey titles. His wins include the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase, King George VI Chase and the 2010 Grand National on Don't Push It.

Emergency services said six people were injured in the crash on the M4 yesterday in which a van overturned.

Three vehicles, a van and two cars, collided just before 9.30am.

Those involved, including McCoy, managed to get out of their vehicles before emergency services arrived.

They were treated at the scene by South Western Ambulance Service crews.

Eastbound lanes after junction 15 for Swindon East were blocked, with one lane of the M4 westbound also closed to enable emergency services to deal with the incident.

It was reported that two lanes were reopened after 10.30am but traffic was still queuing on the motorway after midday.
