SWINDON Libraries are on the hunt for the building blocks of the future as they prepare to launch an exciting new group in the New Year.

Swindon Libraries and Information Service is planning to set up Lego Clubs at the Central and North Swindon Libraries, hopefully beginning in the New Year.

Library staff are asking the public to make donations of Lego or Duplo bricks in good condition, to ensure there are enough bricks for everyone for what they expect to be quite a hit among youngsters.

Manager of the Central Library Glenda O’Connor said the idea was to get children thinking creatively. She said: “The idea is that each session will have a theme and the children then build things with their parents and the other children.

“It is all about stimulating their imagination and them working collectively using their imaginations, as well as developing their literacy skills.

“There are a lot of libraries in the country that have launched clubs of their own and it has proven to be very popular, so we thought it would be brilliant to have one of our own here in Swindon as well

“Both libraries have had some donations of Lego, but if we are to have enough for upwards of 30 children we will need more.”

Volunteers – who previously supported the library during their summer of reading initiative – will spend the Christmas holidays sorting through the donations and cleaning the bricks up in preparation for a New Year launch.

Glenda said: “The children really enjoy the Lego Clubs elsewhere because it is about them working together and doing things that might not seem so exciting if they were at home on their own, but here they can work together and use their imaginations.”

To make a donation of Lego or Duplo visit either of the libraries.

Further details of the club will be announced soon.
