THE memory of an 11-year-old boy who died in a crash will live on through a charity’s national campaign.

Daniel Climance died in June last year after he collided with a road-sweeper in Purton while bike riding with his father and older brother.

The Doing It For Dan virtual run event was launched by Daniel’s childhood best friend Callum Smart and his mother Claire and raised more than £20,000 for road safety charity Brake.

Inspired by the fundraiser’s success, Brake will use “Doing It For Them” as their new 2016 campaign slogan, with Daniel’s story at the heart of their latest safety crusade.

Claire, who lives in St Andrew's Ridge, said she was overwhelmed at the recognition by the charity.

“This is Dan’s legacy. I want the road to be safer for all users, all over the country," she said.

“I feel so honoured that they have chosen the Doing It For Dan concept. They can see how powerful the message is and how much it has united people, and if similar people do similar events all over the world, raise money and help save lives that can’t be a bad thing.

“It is overwhelming to have received that much money, even now we are getting donations flooding in. I’m chuffed that we have had that level of support."

The Bridlewood Primary pupil’s appeal travelled worldwide with generous sprinters from Brazil, New Zealand, Qatar, Dubai and Switzerland signing up in their hundreds to race in memory of the 11-year-old.

Claire, along with Daniel’s parents Stuart Climance and Helen Lucas, has been invited to a special reception at the Houses of Parliament for the launch of the “Doing It For Them” campaign.

Charity Brake promotes road safety awareness, safe and sustainable road use and effective road safety policies. They aim to completely stop road injuries and deaths.

Joe Fenton, community fundraiser at Brake expressed his thanks for the efforts of all runners who Did It For Dan.

“Brake is extremely grateful to everyone who ran, cycled, swam and took part in the ‘Doing it for Dan’ campaign. The momentum the campaign gathered over the last 5 months has been fantastic, with people from all corners of the earth going that extra mile for Dan and supporting Brake’s work.

“All the money that has been raised will allow Brake to continue its important work, supporting bereaved and injured road crash victims and campaigning for safer roads.

"Brake has been so inspired by ‘Doing it for Dan’ and the incredible amount it has raised, that it has been the inspiration for our 2016 fundraising campaign ‘In our hearts – doing it for them’."

"Sometimes, taking part in, or organising a fundraising event in memory of a loved one can be a very positive way to honour their memory. We hope that this campaign, along with the achievements of ‘Doing it for Dan’, will encourage and motivate others to support our work and help us save lives.”
