ROADWORKS at Bruce Street Bridges are now in their final phases, Swindon Borough Council has said, but there will be more road closures to come before the work is complete.

Workmen at the site are currently installing the last of the drainage system at the junction with Rodbourne Road, approaching from Cheney Manor, and are preparing to resurface parts of the road in the coming fortnight.

A spokesman for Swindon Borough Council said: “Over the coming week we shall see the installation of the pedestrian guardrail under the western bridge running from Great Western Way following the route of the shared cycleway through to Rodbourne Road (north).

“Installation of the new signs for the entire scheme will commence this week as well as the final pedestrian crossing poles and associated paving installation. Disconnection of the old street lighting and the connection of the newly installed lighting will also be completed.”

Next week there will be two road closures of more than 24 hours while work is carried out on the road itself. On Monday, February 1, the Kemble Drive section will be closed from 9am until 4pm the following day while the road is planed and surfaced.

On Wednesday, February 3 the Rodbourne Road section, south of the railway bridge will also be closed from 9am until 4pm the following day for the same works to be carried out.

Work is also scheduled for the week after on the section of Rodbourne Road north of the railway bridge, the Bruce Street Bridges roundabout gyratory and Great Western Way, although details of these works have not yet been released.

Rob Stagg, who lives in Rodbourne and works on Bruce Street, said they had observed on average around five people working on site at any one time, and he feared the works would still be going on by Easter.

He said: “The traffic is backing up past B&Q towards Bruce Street Bridges at peak times.

“There have numerous near misses with pedestrians as the traffic coming off of the roundabout towards Sainsbury’s is traveling too fast for the crossing. It would be advisable for police to put a speed camera to observe.”
