Queens Drive in Swindon has been reduced to one lane in both directions to allow Thames Water engineers to safely repair a burst water pipe close to the junction with Somerville Road.

Work to repair the12 inch diameter pipe, which burst at 6am on Sunday, is expected to run into Monday, so Thames Water is urging drivers, and pedestrians who usually use the nearby crossing, to allow extra time for their journeys.

Thames Water spokesperson Becky Trotman said: “We’re sorry for the disruption our repair work is likely to cause on Monday morning.

"The damaged section of pipe we’re replacing is under the central reservation so we’ve closed one lane either side so our team can work safely.

"It’s a complicated job as we’ve got to remove a set of pedestrian traffic lights and various railings and barriers to get to the area we need to dig.

“Water supplies will not be affected by our work and we’ll do all we can to get the road back to normal quickly as we appreciate it’s a busy route.”

Some residents were without water on Sunday morning while Thames Water engineers worked to re-route flows around it its network of pipes.

The majority of supplies began to return to normal just after 9am with the last customers getting their water back around lunchtime.

Police were called to the scene at around 6.30am on Sunday and a closure was put in place for several hours.

Some drivers who attempted to get through the water became stuck as it was so deep while others had to be pulled from mud after going onto the pavement toavoid the water.

Thamesdown Transport reported services 1, 13, 14 and 16 being diverted because of flooding.
