A MAN could hardly believe his eyes when he woke up to find a garage roof had blown off in the strong winds and smashed into his car.

Robert Ashton, 50, of Boscombe Road, was working the night shift when he woke up to find the damage to his Ford Focus – which he had only bought secondhand in August.

“I think it happened three or four hours before I found it and I was on nights last night,” he said.

“I could hear some loud noises and that was what made me wonder what was going on.

“My car was in the spot the roof fell onto and now the side window at the back is damaged, the roof is dented and it is quite badly smashed at the back and the indicator lights are gone and the wing mirrors have fallen off.

“The brake lights have been blown off and the indicator lights have even blown out.

“I only bought the car back in August and I have only just taxed it and so I think it will be a write off.”

Mr Ashton said when he went outside, he found workers moving the fallen roof to a nearby green, securing it down with bags of gravel.

Swindon Borough Council secured the area by installing a temporary roof, which is tied down to prevent further damage being caused.

However, Mr Ashton believes the council needs to act swiftly to make sure the belongings of the garage are saved after it was left without a roof for much of the afternoon.

Mr Ashton said: “The whole roof has come off and the council knew about it being damaged because I told them about it and all they did was put strips in there and it was lifting back in December.

“I’ve spoken to the council who said they will pay for it but at the moment there’s no roof on the garage.”

“I don’t think my car would pass an MOT now and they were lifting the roof back over at lunchtime.

“I don’t know what they are doing but they need to fix it because in those garages, there are a lot of people’s stuff and it was completely uncovered.”

Paddington Drive, Tewkesbury Way and Bibury Road in Walcot were also affected by Storm Imogen, with fallen trees and cables seeing emergency services closing the area.
