MEMBERS of The Swindon Women’s Instiute are hoping to spread some Valentine’s Day love this weekend – for the world we live in.

The ladies will be hosting a craft session at Boswells in the Brunel Centre on Saturday between 2pm and 4pm when they will be encouraging people to make their very own green hearts to wear with pride.

This, they hope, will inspire people to stop and think about what could be lost as a result of climate change.

President of The Swindon WI Kim Masson explained that they were taking part in the national campaign #showthelove in a bid to get people talking about the effects of climate change.

She said: “It’s about getting people to talk about all of the things that they love that would be affected by climate change.

“The hearts we will be making will be green to reflect the climate issues, but also it’s a bit different from all of the red and pink hearts traditionally associated with Valentine’s Day. Hopefully it will be a talking point so people can discuss the things that they love that could be affected by climate change.

“I think it is really interesting looking at the different things that you wouldn’t expect to be affected. Obviously there’s things like trees and crops, but then when you stop and think about all of the things in our daily lives that would be affected, such as tea and chocolate you realise how important it is.”

The session will be run free of charge, and there will be a number of different materials on offer for people to construct their hearts from. Once made, they will be encouraged to post a picture of them wearing them on social media to spread the word further.
