MORE than 20 drivers were dealt with by police for motoring offences in and around Royal Wootton Bassett on Wednesday when officers staged a day of action in a bid to curb bad driving.

Royal Wootton Bassett and Cricklade Neighbourhood Police Team carried out speed checks at various spots around Royal Wootton Bassett, Cricklade and Purton on Wednesday, dealing with 30 drivers overall in the three areas.

Officers slapped three drivers in the town centre with tickets for driving at 40mph along Stoneover Lane, where the speed limit is 30mph.

Further out of the town a ticket was given to a driver who was driving at 40mph through Broad Town where the restriction is 30mph and a further ticket was issued for the same offence committed by another driver on Marlborough Road.

They also gave “words of advice” to one other driver who was caught speeding onMarlborough Road.

But they stopped the largest number of drivers in the Lyneham area outside the base on the A3102 – the main road between Calne and Royal Wootton Bassett. Here they stopped 17 drivers and spoke to them about their speed.

Officers also carried out spot checks in Cricklade and Purton during the day as well. Here they caught one driver who was at the wheel of their car while on their mobile phone, which landed them with a fine as well as points on their licence.

They also stopped six drivers in the Cricklade and Purton area to give them words of advice about the speed at which they were driving.

They have warned drivers to expect more spot checks to be carried out in the near future.

A police spokesman for Royal Wootton Bassett and Cricklade Police said: “The drivers of the speeding tickets issued, have received a £100 fine and three points on their licence.

“The driver on their mobile phone, has received a £100 fine and three points on their licence – that’s one expensive call!

“The Neighbourhood Police Team will continue to be proactive and complete further speed checks in the future. A big thank you to the majority of drivers who saw us and complied with the speed limits.”
