THE hunt is on for a romantic gentleman who has inspired a campaign organised by relationship and sex gurus this Valentine’s weekend.

Relate Gloucestershire and Swindon are encouraging secret admirers to get courageous and declare their hidden affections in the ‘Be a Braveheart’ campaign which runs over the course of this weekend.

The campaign was inspired by an event which occurred on Valentine’s Day approximately 30 years ago in the Regent Arcade Cheltenham. A gentleman walked through the shopping centre holding a single red rose and walked into the café that used to exist at the top of the escalator.

He approached a lady working at a table, smiled and gave her the red rose before walking away.

Sue Chick, who saw the event, said: “The lady seemed shocked and didn’t expect it at all but her face was delightfully surprised. It seemed as if this man knew this lady would be working at this café at this particular time but it was obvious that they were also not well acquainted - yet.”

In honour of this 'braveheart' act Relate Gloucestershire and Swindon are providing single red roses in The Royal Oak in Old Town over Saturday and Sunday so customers can give one to their secret desire or to the one they love – for a donation.

But they are really keen to get to the bottom of who the mystery gent was, and what became of the couple – if anything.

Kimberley Wall, campaign manager, said: “It is such a romantic and interesting story and it would be wonderful if we knew more about what happened after this act of courage. Did love grow? Did the rose have contact details on them? Or did this become a wonderful memory for them both that simply lives in the past?

“If anyone recognises this story or knows the people involved then please get in touch with us here at Relate; it would be great to know who the local 'Braveheart' and his sweetheart are who inspired our campaign.”
