A 19-YEAR-OLD who was given 150 hours of unpaid work for offences including writing his name in the toilets of Swindon Magistrates' Court now faces even more hours after he failed to turn up to complete them.

Shaun Kingsman, of Somerville Road, was due to work off the hours relating to offences in July last year including criminal damage, a motoring offence and failing to surrender.

He failed to turn up for his allotted 150 hours of unpaid work in November and could not explain why he had not.

Wayne Hardy, defending, told magistrates that his client was preoccupied with other offences being dealt with at Crown Court to focus wholeheartedly on his unpaid work.

“The criminal damage offence was that he wrote his name in the toilets of this very court," said Mr Hardy.

“The motoring offence was that he was on the back of a scooter which police believe was stolen.

“My client has always been aware that he needed to sort this out. He knows he won’t be given a second opportunity but he would like the opportunity to show he has changed and grown up.”

After completing a one-hour induction course, Kingsman has been handed 14 more hours – bringing his total to 163 hours of unpaid work.

Geoff Earl, chairman at Friday's hearing, said: “You will have to work at this because it is breached, we will revoke that order and replace it with something a lot less palatable.”
