A 30-YEAR-OLD man has told magistrates that injuring his former girlfriend with a glass was a “reckless mistake” but he denied the offence.

When Vance Fairbanks, of Edencroft, Highworth, appeared before Swindon Magistrates' Court on Wednesday he denied assault causing actual bodily harm and criminal damage.

Fairbanks, 30, was in a relationship with a former girlfriend at the time of assault which took place in the Patriot Arms pub on November 27 last year.

It is alleged that on that evening, the pair, who have known each other for 13 years, were supposed to meet at the pub in Chiseldon where she was set to tell him that she wanted to end their relationship.

Prosecuting, Nick Barr said: “They arrived and he had been drinking and after a while, they went outside to the smoking area where they had an argument.

“With that, he picked up a wine glass and threw it at her which hit her knee, cutting it.

“He then picks up a pint glass and throws it, cutting her left eyebrow.

“She was taken to hospital for the particularly nasty gash which required stitches.”

It is also alleged that Fairbanks caused damaged to his former partner’s iPhone 4 during the altercation.

Lee Mott, defending said there was no premeditation to the incident and that his client “swiped” the glasses off the table rather than throwing them.

Fairbanks will appear at Swindon Crown Court on March 11.
