A DRUG addict waiting to be sentenced for charges of theft and burglary has been remanded in custody amid fears for his safety.

Aaron Wright appeared in custody before magistrates sitting in Swindon on Tuesday after he failed to comply with his bail conditions while he awaits sentence. He admitted breaching his bail by not registering himself at Gablecross Police Station on Wednesday, Saturday and Monday which he was ordered to do.

Wright, of no fixed abode, is awaiting sentence for a charge of burglary with intent to steal dating from January 28 and a theft matter on the same date. He is also further charged with another count of burglary with intent to steal from the Riverside Centre, Swindon on January 30.

Defending him, Michael Jeary told the magistrates that 21-year-old Wright had not been able to address his problems of drug addiction.

He said: “He is at the end of his tether – he is out of money, he is in dispute with the benefits agency and the drug dealers are out to get him and he fears for his own safety. Custody would be saving us all time and money – it is not often that I say that.”

Magistrates agreed with the recommendation and remanded Wright in custody until his sentencing, when he will appear via a video link at Chippenham Magistrates’ Court on February 25.
