A PLAY thought of by many critics as a modern classic has a home-grown airing in Swindon this weekend.

Breathing Corpses by Laura Wade had its premiere at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 2005 to positive reviews.

The Sunday Times described it as a "terrifying tour de force."

The play begins with the discovery of a dead body by a hotel maid and takes the audience on a journey back through a chain of misfortune and intrigue.

On Saturday and Sunday it will be performed at the Town Hall by Swindon group Gatecrash Theatre.

Gatecrash is a semi-professional organisation set up to stage performances and workshops, as well as support new and aspiring actors, writers, directors and others who want to become involved with theatre.

The company was set up in 2014 in response to the growing number of adults living in or around Swindon who are talented actors, writers and directors and need a creative outlet.

It is aimed at those too old for youth theatre but wanting professional mentorship, support and opportunity. Seeking an opportunity to work and learn from professionals in the business, develop their craft and share their own talents.

Natasha Garbutt (director) is being mentored through Breathing Corpses by artistic director of Gatecrash, Laura Barnes. The design team of Paul Marks and Amber Sadler are being mentored by associate artist and professional designer Sue Condie.

"Drama school training can be hugely expensive,'' said Laura. "Projects like this add an alternative form of development that can potentially work instead of, in advance of or even alongside the more traditional routes. We are keen to make arts accessible to everyone and not a profession just for the wealthy.''

Live music will be provided by another local talent, Charlie Miles.

The play will be performed at 8pm on Saturday and at 2pm and 8pm on Sunday. Tickets cost £10, with concessions available at £9, and the box office can be reached on 01793 601700 and via swindondance.org.uk.
