A CALL is set to go out to local businesses and organisations calling on them to get behind this year’s Swindon Half Marathon.

Social enterprise SEQOL, which provides care to the elderly and vulnerable, has confirmed it will be once again be involved in managing and coordinating the popular event.

Last year’s race saw hundreds of runners pound the streets following doubts after the initial sponsor, the British Heart Foundation, pulled out.

Following a public appeal, SEQOL stepped in help a number of organisations and an army of volunteers hold the event which was hailed as a resounding success from those involved.

There were worries this year’s would be hit following a change in SEQOL’s funding from Swindon Borough Council but they have said they will organise the event.

However, the half marathon’s success will be dependent on the willingness of others to come forward and offer support.

SEQOL’s Katie Taylor-Neale, Event Director for SEQOL Community Foundation said: “SEQOL Community Foundation, the charitable arm of SEQOL are keen to support the Swindon Half Marathon as a key community event which encourages people to be active and supports their well-being.

“The success of the 2015 event came from the involvement of local businesses and individuals, without them this event could not happen.

“SEQOL Community Foundation will continue with our coordinating and project management role and wish to build upon the success of the 2015 Half Marathon.  The event will be dependent on the generous sponsorship and donations from Swindon community.

The event normally takes place in October and SEQOL will soon announce details of how people can get involved.

“Last year we had fantastic support from companies and individuals, including financial support, donated products, specialist advice and of course all the fantastic volunteers, all of which made the Half such a great community event,” said Katie

“This year we will be looking for further funding and support from an even wider group to make the Swindon Half a success and to continue to benefit local people and charities.

“We’ll be announcing details of the 2016 event and opportunities for sponsorship and involvement soon, so watch this space.”

The news of SEQOL’s support was welcomed by councillor and keen runner Stan Pajak (Lib Dem, Eastcott), who will once again be taking part.

He said: “Last year SEQOL did a really good job and it felt it had life again. The half-marathon is a fantastic event for Swindon.

“At a time when we are talking about obesity and other fitness illnesses, it is great to have something for the whole town which focuses on something healthy.

“There is something for all ages with the fun run and a half marathon is a great length because it is more achievable.

“I have taken part in every one so far so will be doing so again.”
