FORMER pupils who left Headlands School in 1966 are on the hunt for members of their year group ahead of a 50 year reunion.

The seven classmates, led in their efforts by Sam Smyth, met recently at The Goddard Arms to look over school photographs and scan through their class registers in an effort to identify old friends.

Sam said: “We had 120 in our year in total, there are those of us here and then probably another eight or ten that we’re in contact with.

“We had a 25 year reunion and we managed to get 78 people along – we’ve got the addresses of those who replied to that invitation in writing but there are more we need to track down.

“With the guys of course it’s easier but many of the ladies have changed their names which makes it a little bit more difficult.

“Some have moved away from the area but we think many of them will still be in Swindon so we’re hopeful.”

The group, who left Headlands in the summer of 1966, hope to be in a position to hold the reunion by September.

They managed to acquire the original records from the school with all the names of those who registered at the start of the year.

Sam brought along a long black and white school photo and together they managed to put more names to familiar faces.

Jenny Jefferies, who was Jenny Burton at school, found the photos brought back memories of her time at Headlands.

She said: “It was an absolutely super school, it was one of only two grammar schools in town.

“We had to mind our p’s and q’s, girls didn’t speak to boys, there were segregated playgrounds but it was great fun – and we learnt a lot.”

Bryn Hunt recalled his school days with a mixture of laughter and dread: “We all had to do Latin, it was compulsory for everyone.”

Jenny added: “It will be fantastic if we could get as many people together as possible, it’ll take a bit of detective work but we’ll get there.”
