A PREDICTION that roadworks at Bruce Street Bridges would still be going on at Easter has come true.

The work, which was originally due to be completed in November last year, is still causing problems for commuters and workers nearby.

Back in January Rob Stagg, who works on Bruce Street, said he feared the roadworks would not be finished by Easter.

This week lane closures were still in place but according to the latest information from Swindon Borough Council, the completion date is March 29.

“I think the biggest thing from my point of view is the fact that it was supposed to be finished in September last year, then October, then there was celebration that there weren’t going to be any roadworks over Christmas,” Mr Stagg said yesterday.

“The sign is up saying there is further work to be done so I think there will be further disruption.”

But he said the business had started to see a steady flow of customers, which was good news “considering it is now nearly two years on.”

The borough council project to install a new drainage system at the busy junction with Rodbourne Road, which is prone to flooding in heavy rain, was started in autumn 2014.

The road layout of four mini roundabouts was also blamed for causing congestion and has been replaced with a single roundabout and part time traffic light control. Planners hope it will reduce queues caused by traffic stopping and starting.

Lane closures around the junction, part of Great Western Way, caused gridlock for months. Then in January the final phase of the work was started with resurfacing and the installation of guard rails following the route of a shared cycleway through to Rodbourne Road to complete the final link in the Western Flyer cycle scheme.
