WHETHER it’s bone dry, fresh and vibrant, or the winemaker has taken a softly, softly approach, these well balanced white wines will enliven your mood...

If you shy away from rich whites and like a crisp, clean style to put the wind back in your sails, the citrus fruits in Verdicchio Dei Castelli Di Jesi Classico 2014, Italy (£5.75, Asda) are enhanced with hints of blanched almonds and a slight bitterness on the finish, with just enough acidity to make it a perfect aperitif.

The Saint-Mont region in south-west France is often overlooked in favour of its more illustrious neighbour (Bordeaux lies to the north), and yet its wines offer excellent quality at reasonable prices. A blend of local grape varieties, Fleur de d’Artagnan Blanc 2013, Saint Mont, France (£8.49 or £6.99 club members, www.rudewines.co.uk) is wonderfully fresh and fruity with apple, grapefruit and citrus flavours that mingle in leaps and bounds, with acidity on the juicy finish.

Godello grows in the Galicia region of Spain (in the fertile north-west), and you’ll find the wines are crisp and bright but with a weighty richness. Try fashionable white Taste the Difference Godello 2014, Bierzo, Spain (£8, Sainsbury’s) which is full of apricot and apple flavours, lively citrus acidity and offers ample depth and texture.

Cited as one of the best South African vintages on record, this juicy, concentrated Zalze Reserve Chenin Blanc 2015, South Africa (£10, Sainsbury’s) is beautifully balanced with tropical fruits on the nose and the ripe peach and yellow fruits are complemented by a touch of oak, a streak of minerality and a round, fresh finish.

Chile has turned its hand to this northern Rhone variety of wine-making, and Emiliana Organic Viognier 2015, Chile (£10, Marks & Spencer) showcases a similar level of lusciousness. Concentrated, perfumed and sumptuous, with a peaches and cream character, a touch of oak has blessed the wine with an increased richness and a smoothly layered texture. Deliciously exotic with a seductive finish.

Bright and snappy with lively acidity and an aromatic lift, this delightful blend of sauvignon blanc and semillon brings everything to the table. Highlights of Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2015, Margaret River, Australia (£12.95, www.ndjohn.co.uk) include juicy lime and passion fruit flavours that play against honeysuckle and grassy notes, with plenty of drive on the long, textured finish.

Rich and honeyed, this gorgeous Boroli Bel Ami Langhe Chardonnay 2011, Piemonte, Italy (£13.99, www.sohowine.co.uk) is as sunny as the colourful label and will reward you with baskets of tropical fruits, vanilla, toasted hazelnut and layer upon layer of patisserie-like apricot and apple flavours, sleek acidity and a silky, soft palate.
