DRIVERS are experiencing long delays on the M4 after a lorry overturned between junctions 16 and 17.

The McDonald's HGV was travelling westbound at about 2am when jacknifed and left the carriageway, before ending up on its side in a ditch.

The driver was not injured in the incident.

Emergency services and highways personnel are on scene working to recover the vehicle from the ditch using a crane.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: "No traffic is being allowed on to the motorway at junction 16 travelling westbound, diversions are in place to reroute traffic.

"Traffic already on the motorway, travelling from junction 15, is being given the option to exit at junction 16 or to continue on - however the road is operating with one lane only from that point until around the area of Royal Wootton Bassett.

"The Highways Agency are working as fast as they can to get the road reopened."

Due to the lane closures in place, traffic is already backing up for long distances.

Social media updates from Highways England suggest they do not expect normal traffic movement to resume until at least 12.30pm.

We will provide more updates as we get them.
