WILTSHIRE Council has taken the decision to close or transfer public toilets across the county to save money.

One of the towns affected will be Royal Wootton Bassett which has been deemed to require 'significant investment to improve and maintain.'

In addition to this, the running costs, provided by Wiltshire Council, will suggest an increase in the town council’s precept of two percent.

Wiltshire Council is not legally obligated to provide Public Conveniences but the town council has expressed and interest with regard to taking over the public conveniences.

Town Councillor Mike Leighfield said: ‘The town council has approached Wiltshire Council with the view of taking over the toilets together with the Boroughfields Car Park as part of a broader package. By creating this wider service, the town council hopes to provide a cost effective service for our residents and visitors to the town.

Wiltshire Council has responded to the town council saying it is prepared to enter into dialogue to discuss this but it currently doesn't have enough staff available to do this as they are all currently pursuing similar discussions with Salisbury.
