A MAN caught dealing crack cocaine and heroin has escaped a prison sentence and been ordered to do community service.

Ian Carey, 23, of Tavistock Road, pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of the Class A drugs at the earliest opportunity, and was sentenced to two years imprisonment, suspended for two years, at Swindon Crown Court.

He must carry out 100 hours of unpaid work, rehabilitation activity and pay a £100 fine.

The sentencing follows an investigation carried out by the Wiltshire Police's dedicated crime team, who were initially alerted to Carey's activities on July 6 last year when officers spotted him in Welcombe Avenue conducting what appeared to be a drug deal.

When challenged, he ran away, but was detained after a short chase, and was found with cash and a mobile phone containing evidence of his involvement in drug supply.

A search of his home address revealed a package of 37 individual wraps of crack cocaine and heroin worth between £370 and £620. These packages were found to contain his fingerprints.

"Class A drug supply destroys lives and fuels crime and anti-social behaviour," said PC Joe Shanklin, of the dedicated crime team.

"If you are aware of drug activity in your area, please call 101. All information will be treated with the utmost discretion."
