A MAN who stole a vacuum cleaner with an insecure security tag has found himself slapped with a second community order to carry out alongside one he is already completing.

Stuart Jonas previously pleaded guilty to the offence of theft from Robert Dyas on Regent Street dating from March 16 of this year.

The court heard that 36-year-old Jonas of Tudor Walk had gone into the store on Regent Street and taken the display model of the vacuum cleaner valued at £49.99 and put it in his bag before leaving without paying.

He had then sold this on for £20

Defending him, Mark Glendenning told the court that Jonas had a history of drug and alcohol abuse, while magistrates also heard from the probation service who explained that Jonas had a number of health issues and no permanent address.

Sentencing him, chairman of the bench Deborah Couzens told Jonas they would be imposing a new community order on him to run alongside his current one. She said: “The existing community order will stay in place and we think this offence is serious enough to warrant a second order.”

The new roder will last for nine months, during which time he must work with the probation service to address his issues. He was deemed unfit to carry out unpaid work, and no financial penalties were imposed due to his outstanding fines and current financial means.
