AFTER three months on the road – and countless blisters on his feet – Steve Carr finally made it in to his final destination of John O’Groats on Friday evening.

When he spoke to The Adver shortly after 5pm on Friday he had less than a mile to go until he reached the most north-easterly point of the British Isles, having set off from Land’s End earlier this year.

Steve’s life shattered in 1991 when his older brother Paul was killed in a horrific accident on Akers Way in Swindon. Paul was one of five young people to lose their lives when a car careered off the road and smashed into them. At the age of 15, Steve had to deal with the loss of his brother and the effect of the trauma on his whole family.

Since that time, he has experienced mental health problems, drug addiction and homelessness. Now he is in recovery and the strength and determination that has brought him this far is now driving him to try and help others.

The 40-year-old this week celebrated his milestone birthday with some of the people his sponsored walk from Land’s End to John O’Groats has been inspired to help, when he enjoyed a slap-up pizza feast with some of the homeless people living in Tent City.

Speaking on Friday evening as the village of John O’Groats came into view he revealed he ached a lot. He said: ”It has been three months and I have been walking non-stop. It is quite emotional it’s back to reality once I get to the end, but back to Swindon and on to really, really good things.”

Once he gets back to Swindon he will be working on his new venture Mindcanyon in a bid to help combat social isolation. “Right now I am very, very emotional because I know this walk is over,” he said. “But I can’t wait until Monday when I am back, I am really looking forward to Monday and seeing everyone again.”

He revealed he had been receiving a number of messages through his social media channels throughout the trek from people dealing with mental health issues themselves who had been inspired by his challenge.

A welcome back event will be hosted at the Sun Inn on Monday from 2pm, but before that he will be stopping off in Prestbury near Manchester where he will be taking part in a Hackathon.

He said: “It is really emotional seeing this view, thinking I have walked from one end of the country to another, it has been weird to be walking on a day by day basis.
