A MAN in his 30s is in a serious condition following an assault in the town centre in the early hours of this morning.
The incident is believed to have taken place between midnight and 3am this morning near the water fountain by Canal Walk and the Parade.
The man was taken to Great Western Hospital with a serious head injury but was later transferred to Southmead Hospital, Bristol.
He remains in a serious condition.
Wiltshire Police are appealing to the public for information.
Detective Inspector Steve Kirby said: “Enquiries are ongoing into this incident which has left one man seriously injured.
“We are very much at the early stages of the investigation but we would like to appeal to anyone who was in the area of Canal Walk, The Parade and Regent Circus between midnight and 3am this morning, who may have seen a group of three or four men, to call police immediately.
"Any information, no matter how small, may be crucial to our investigation.”
