A MAN remains in a serious condition in hospital after he sustained a serious head injury in the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday.

Now police are renewing their appeal for witnesses to the assault which took place in Swindon town centre to come forward.

The incident is believed to have taken place near to the water fountain by Vodafone and Topshop in the town centre at approximately 2.15am.

A man, aged 40 and from the Swindon area, suffered a serious head injury and was initially taken to the Great Western Hospital by ambulance.

He was later transferred to Southmead Hospital in Bristol where he remains in a serious condition.

Detective Chief Inspector Jeremy Carter said: “I would like to reassure the local community that our officers and staff are carrying out a thorough and robust investigation into this incident, and a team of officers are currently obtaining and analysing CCTV footage from the area.

“Enquiries in and around the town centre have been continuing today to try and identify any key witnesses to the incident who have not already spoken to police officers.

“This was a Bank Holiday weekend, and therefore, there would have been a number of people out drinking in the town centre and enjoying the extra day off.

“Any information you have, no matter how small, may be crucial to our investigation.”
