AFTER weeks of campaigning, voters in Swindon will go to the polls today to decide who will lead the town for the next two years.

Thousands of leaflets have been posted through doors as candidates try to persuade people to put their faith in them.

As well as deciding on a third of the Swindon Borough Council chamber, people are being asked to vote for the local Police and Crime Commissioner with the winner being in post for four years.

For three straight years, there has been an election in Swindon and a seat in every ward, with the exception of Chiseldon and Lawn, is up for grabs.

Turnout is not expected to be high but with good weather forecast throughout the day, candidates will be hoping people get out to cast their vote.

There are dozens of polling booths dotted around the borough, making it as convenient has possible for people to have their say.

Schools, community centres and pubs are among the places where polls are being held.

Starting at 7am, the polling booths will stay open until 10pm tonight with the count taking place at the Oasis a short time later.

Once the ballot boxes start arriving, hundreds of volunteers will start counting the slips, along with the all those which have been sent in through the post.

Although there is no set time, it is expected the results will start to come through on a ward by ward basis in the early hours of Friday morning.

Being the only count taking place overnight, the PCC vote in Wiltshire and Swindon is likely to gain some national attention as it will be the first one announced.

When the first PCC elections took place in 2012, turnout was very low nationally and less than 16 per cent locally so there will be an eagerness to see if it is different this time.

Various PCC counts will take place across Wiltshire with the results being phoned through to the Oasis and the final result will be announced after the local election count has finished.

Throughout the day, the Adver website will be reporting live to keep readers informed of developments throughout the day.

This evening there will be several reporters at the Oasis who will be first to give the results as they are announced.
